Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“Various techniques can be used to perform inspection of struc tures in a non-destructive manner. Suchtechniques can include use of ionizing r adiation such as X-rays for inspection, electromagnetic techniquessuch as eddy- current techniques, or acoustic techniques, as illustrative examples. In one app roach, anultrasonic transducer or an array of such transducers can be used to i nspect a structure using acousticenergy. Ultrasonic inspection is useful for in spection of a variety of different structures including bar-shapedor tubular st ructures, welds, planar (e.g., plate materials), and composite materials such as carbon-fiberreinforced composite structures.
