Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“Although many technologies exist for surveying the roads, oft entimes the costs and constraints make itless appealing for practical use. Many solutions require modifications to the vehicle, costly attachments,computers a nd training to use. Usually these technologies specialize in surveying a single component ofroad condition. To detect the full spectrum of incidents expected t o keep roads maintained, the mostcommon and effective practice is still largely manual. Surveyors drive vehicles down roads and stop theirvehicle when they fi nd an object of interest. They take a picture, and then note down the incident d etailsto revisit. This is a slow and costly method, oftentimes leaving a backlo g of roads that are overdue forreassessment. As municipalities grow, it becomes harder and harder to stay on top of all the incidents inthe system.
