The assignee for this patent, patent number 12161331, is Cilag GmbH Internationa l (Zug, Switzerland).Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “Insome surgical settings, endoscopic surgical instruments ma y be preferred over traditional open surgicaldevices in order to make use of a smaller incision in the patient, which may reduce post-operative recoverytime a nd complications. Some endoscopic surgical instruments may be suitable for place ment of a distalend effector at a desired surgical site through the cannula of a trocar. These distal end effectors mayengage tissue in a number of ways to ac hieve a diagnostic or therapeutic effect (e.g., endocutter, grasper, cutter, sta pler, clip applier, access device, drug/gene therapy delivery device, and energy delivery deviceusing ultrasound, RF, laser, etc.). Endoscopic surgical instrum ents may include a shaft between the endeffector and a handle portion, which is manipulated by the clinician. Such a shaft may enable insertion toa desired de pth and rotation about the longitudinal axis of the shaft, thereby facilitating positioning of theend effector within the patient. Positioning of an end effect or may be further facilitated through inclusionof one or more articulation join ts or features, enabling the end effector to be selectively articulated orother wise deflected relative to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.
