A control system based on low-cost standard hardware has been implemented in a steel mill in Germany with impressive results. Detailed information about the steel production process requires the continuous availability of consistent operating data. Because this is no longer possible using conventional control technology Buderus in Wetzlar, Germany, decided to use a Soft PLC based on a PC for the modernisation of a rolling mill. The control concept developed by lbs released a range of ratio-nalisation potential and immediately achieved improvements in the rolling technology.
