In this historic article we witness the author's own account of his great discovery: the nature and location of the enzyme system enabling sodium-potassium exchange across membranes in living cells, particu-larly nerve cells. That discovery has stood the test of time. active ion transport of sodium and potassium ions through cell membranes is ubiquitous.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
