CHEMICAL CONSTITUENTS OF THE LEAVES OF Polyscias fruticosa

Polyscias fruticosa(L.)Harms(Araliaceae)is widespread in Africa and tropical countries(1).As a traditional Vietnamese medicine,R fruticosa leaves have been used as a tonic agent for the treatment of ischemia and inflammation(2).Previous studies shown that P,fruticosa leaf extracts exhibit a variety of biological functions,including analgesic,antipyretic,molluscicidal,anti-inflammatory,and antidiabetic activities(3,4).Some chemical constituents of this plant have been reported previously(5-8).However,the chemical constituents from the nonpolar extracts were scarce.In our chemical investigation of this plant,nine compounds(1-9)were isolated from the diethyl ether fraction of P.fruticosa leaves.ID NMR chemical shifts of C-1,C-5,and C-14 of 5 were reassigned based on detailed analysis of 2D NMR data.Compounds 1,3,5,and 7 were evaluated for cytotoxicity against HepG2 and K562 cancer cell lines,but none of them showed considerable cytotoxicity.To the best of our knowledge,compounds 3-9 were isolated from this plant for the first time,while compounds 5 and 6 were first isolated from the genus Polyscias.
