Ethanolic extract of Madhuca longifolia var. latifolia bark (EMLB-1: 100 mg/kg and EMLB -2: 200 mg/kg was prepared and anti-stress activity was investigated by Anoxia induced stress in mice. Immobilisation stress in rats and Swimming endurance test inmice. EMLB-2 exhibited remarkable effect as enhanced convulsion time in anoxia stress model and displayed significant effect as improved swimming time in mice in swimming endurance test. Both doses EMLB-1 and 2 reduced the serum levels of glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, blood urea nitrogen and cortisol in rats as equated to control. Also, EMLB-2 produced remarkable protective effects on organs such as liver, adrenal gland, spleen and testes. The present experiments demonstrated that the EMLB possessed significant mood elevating action though future investigations called to ascertain the actual method of action involved in its anti-stress property.
