The Decline and Fall of Radiology (and How to Avoid It)

Edward Gibbon's [1] The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is one of the greatest historical works ever composed in the English language. Its volumes were published between two great events in the history of the United States, the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the ratification of the Constitution in 1789. Gibbon's work granted him the title of the "first modern historian of the Roman Empire" because of the meticulous research he conducted while composing his masterpiece. Gibbon has withstood the test of time, which is evident because after more than two centuries, his book is still being referenced in contemporary works on Roman history [2]. However, Gibbon's work has more than merely historical significance, for it offers deep insights into timeless forces of dissolution that can undermine any large organization. Some of these forces are evident today in radiology. If we are to avoid following Rome's path to ruin, it is vital that radiology organizations and their leaders attend carefully to these forces.
