Abstract
Is there any design and detailing information on special moment frames (SMFs) connected to the web of a column? I am not aware of any design or detailing resources for an SMF with the beam connecting to the column web as you describe. I am also not aware of any specific section of the AISC Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 341) that expressly prohibits the column orientation you describe. However, there are provisions that would make this condition impractical.
