There have been more than 300,000 randomized trials published since the landmark trial of streptomycin for tuberculosis was published in 1948 , This research design has become the sine qua non for licensing of pharmaceu-ticals, and is growing more influential in evaluation of other health care interventions such as surgery, continuing education, and the organization of care, as decision makers increasingly seek reliable evidence to inform their decisions.
