Hewittia malabarica (L.) Suresh of the family Convolvulaceae is reported as an addition to the flora of Uttar Pradesh from the Gorakhpur district. A detailed description along with photographs is provided for easy identification in the field. The morning glory family Convolvulaceae Juss. is one of the largest families of flowering plants, consisting of 59 accepted genera and about 1850 species (Mabberley, 2017), widely distributed in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of the world. The plants of this family are generally herbs and shrubs, with twining or climbing habit, often with milky juice (http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_ id=10216). In India, the family Convolvulaceae harbours about 110 species within 23genera (https://sites.google.com/ site/efloraofindia/species/a—1/cl/convolvulaceae), having a cosmopolitan distribution. Uttar Pradesh has about 55 species under 13 genera in the family Convolvulaceae (Khanna, 2017). During the survey of vegetation ofGorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the authors observed an interesting plant growing luxuriantly along the roadsides of Gorakhpur-Maharajganj Highway near Gulhariya Thana, Gorakhpur (26.82°N & 83.40°E) at about 84 m elevation. After detailed studiesand consulting relevant literature, authentic specimens, it was identified as Hewittia malabarica (L.) Suresh. This species has not been reported by previous workers in Uttar Pradesh (Clarke, 1883; Duthie, 1915; Raizada, 1976; Srivastava, 1976; Khanna etal.,1999; Khanna, 2017).Therefore, the occurrence of this species in Gorakhpur district constitutes a new record for the flora of Uttar Pradesh.
