? 2022 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering ChemistryMXenes are two-dimensional (2D) layered materials of early transition metal carbides and/or nitrides used in a variety of technological applications. Due to its interesting morphology, high surface area, and biocompatibility, MXenes are the trending materials in the electrochemical and/or biosensor fabrication due to their novel and technically relevant properties. The present state of the art in the field of electrochemical sensors fabricated from MXenes is investigated in this review, with a focus on the detection of hazardous contaminants in the environment. And also, the comparison of fundamental properties of different nanomaterials with MXene was mentioned. To begin, we will look at how different synthesis techniques and surface functionalization alter MXene characteristics and, as a result, sensing performance. Second, MXenes are discussed as an electrode modifier for the detection of hazardous compounds, such as, phenolic moieties, pesticides and heavy metal ions. At the conclusion, the difficulties and future opportunities are discussed.
