The roots of Ligusticum multivittatum Franch., which is distributed in the Himalaya Mountains (3,000-4,000 m above sea level), are used as a Chinese folk medicine in local areas of Yunnan Province, China . However, there has been no report about the medicinal effects and the components. In the course of our studies of the chemical constituents of umbelliferous plants, we have isolated 5 new coumarins, (+)-peujaponisin (1) and multivittans A-D (2-5), in addition to 13 known coumarins: bergapten, imperatorin, xanthotoxin, isopimpinellin, angelicin, umbelliferone, nuttallin, (+)-cis-kellactone, 3'(R),4'(R)-4'-senecioyl kellactone, 3'(R),4'(R)-3',4'-disenecioyl kellac-tone, (+)-octanoyllomatin, (+)-decanoyllomatin, and (+)-dodecanoyllomatin; and a polyacetylen, falcarindiol; and a phenylpropanoid, ferulic acid. This paper is concerned with the structure elucidation of compounds 1-5 (Fig. 1).
