The month of May has so far been a cruel one for investors. Sharp drops have been seen across many equity markets, with the Dow Jones on its worst streak since early in the COVID-19 pandemic. The S&P/TSX Global Mining Index is, at time of writing, down by 18% over the past month, albeit from the 14-year highs in April. The war in Ukraine continues to add political risk, COVID is ripping through an under-vaccinated Chinese population, logistical snarls in global shipping are worsening, but the real spectre is that of inflation.
