Carmaker Tesla is diversifying its direct supply of key battery metals, which are cobalt, lithium and nickel, and predicts strong demand for these critical minerals. Tesla owner Elon Musk, who has previously speculated about buying his own mines because of high lithium prices, now has a dozen direct supply contracts in place for Tesla for the three key battery metals. These are sourced from countries including China, Australia, Canada, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the South Pacific territory of New Caledonia.
