German radiologist and cardiologist Andreas Gruntzig made history on September 16, 1977, by completing the world’s first percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). This important medical advancement was built on the work of Werner Forssmann, who proved in 1929 that catheterization of the human heart was possible, and on the efforts of F Mason Sones, who conducted the first coronary angiogram in 1958.1-7
