In 2003, the European Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) came into force. It was transposed into UK law under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2006 (as amended), which placed the responsibility of financing the recycling and recovery of WEEE on the producers of goods. In July 2012, the WEEE (Recast) Directive came into force, requiring that all member states would need to transpose the Directive into national law by February 2014.
