Oil is the primary focus of embargoes on Russian commodities because of its invasion of Ukraine, but copper and other metals are moving into sharper focus, especially with the imminent start-up of the big Udokan copper mine in Siberia controlled by sanc tioned oligarch Alisher Usmanov. Described as one of the next major sources of copper for an electrifying world, Udokan is expected to produce a modest 51,000 tonnes of copper this year, rising to 136,000t next year, po tentially on its way to 400,000t by 2026 - when it could be a top-10 producer.
