Several mechanisms have been proposed to account forthe effect of hydrogen on the mechanical properties of materials. Thein-situ transmission electron microscopy deformation techniqueprovides a means of directly observing the response of material tostress and to a gaseous environment and provides a means ofassessing the microscopic mechanism of deformation and hydrogenembrittlement, which are frequently proposed to explain macroscopic phenomenon.
