The Appalachian coal sector has been shrinking for years as companies are compelled to spend more money to access tougher-to-reach seams of the fossil resource. In the meantime, competitors in areas together with the Illinois Basin, Powder River Basin of Wyoming and Montana have much thicker coal seams which are cheaper to get to.
