Having been written off in recent times; the material handling and logistics industry has proved its detractors wrong. But much still needs to be done to make the industry a vital part of the business future. As we enter the new millennium, US consumption of material handling and logistics technologies and services is rapidly approaching 100bn US dollars per year This fact is especially remarkable when we consider that the demise of the US material handing industry was predicted as recently as 20 years ago. To the surprise and delight of many, the industry has shown growth figures year after year that have outstripped growth in the general economy. In this article, I will share some views on the origin of this extraordinary growth and mention some factors that I believe will continue to fuel average growth above that in the general economy in the first decade of the new millennium.
