Hedyotis caudatifolia Merr. & F.P. Metcalf, a perennial shrub-like herb belonging to the Hedyotis genus (Rubiaceae), is widely distributed in China [1]. The whole herb of H. caudatifolia, a folk medicine, was traditionally used to treat asthma, chronic bronchitis, inflamed eye, children's malnutritional stagnation, bleeding in trauma, children's fever, sore throat, and diarrhea by the Yao nationalities in China [2]. The characteristic chemical constituents of this genus are alkaloids, anthraquinones, flavonoids, iridoids, steroids, and triterpenoids [3-10]. Few reports on the chemical compositions of H. caudatifolia can be found in the literature [11, 12]. As part of our continuing investigations on bioactive constituents from traditional Chinese medicinal plants, a systematic phytochemical study of H. caudatifolia carried out in our lab led to the isolation of seven anthraquinones and five coumarins.
