The Future of Coal

Significantly fewer large power plants are being built worldwide than was assumed just a few years ago: In Europe, energy suppliers prefer to continue operating old boilers in view of the low electricity prices. In the United Kingdom, coal nowadays supplies so little electricity that the National Grid reported in April 2017 about the first day without the use of fossil fuels since 1882. In 2017 the country saw more than 300 hours without coal usage. And in China and India, governments are reducing their formerly bombastic plans to build new large-scale power plants in the face of massive environmental problems.
