Morphology, immunophenotype, cytogenetics, and genomics have long dominated diagnostics in acute my-elogenous leukemia (AML). In this issue of Cancer Cell, Bottomly et al. demonstrate that combining the above with transcriptomics and ex vivo drug testing of patient myeloblasts yields novel diagnostic and therapeutic insights with the potential for clinical translation.
