Aucuba japonica var. variegata Dombrain, as an important type of garden landscape plant belonging to Cornaceae, is widely cultivated with green-yellow variegated leaves in China, Japan, and Korea. In Japan, there are a large number of wild A. japonica var. variegata planted in the warm-temperate regions as an evergreen dioecious shrub species, which is best adapted to shaded locations [1]. Specifically, the leaves of A. japonica var. variegata exhibit an irregular pattern of yellow or light yellow patches and spots [2]. There are some reports on the isolation of phytoconstituents of A. japonica, such as aucubin, eucommioside II, aucubigenin, and eucommiol [3-6]. Aucubigenin shows both antibacterial and, to a lesser extent, fungicidal activities [5]. Eucommiol, which is identified from A. japonica Thunb., shows an inhibitory effect on the growth of human lymphoid leukemia cells [6]. An ethanol-based extract of A. japonica has been shown to have inhibitory activity on abnormalangiogenesis in the retina, and aucubin is also found to prevent N-methyl-N-nitrosourea-induced retinal degeneration in mice.
