Drought is one of the most serious abiotic stresses, causing substantial yield losses. Recently, scientists have been using biotechnological methods to introduce exogenous genes into plants aiming at the improvement of their tolerance to drought stress and to minimize resulting damages. To develop drought stress tolerant soybean in Brazil, we started transforming several gene constructs into soybean for evaluating these transgene functions. In this article, we summarize the development of drought stress tolerant soybean. We explain our soybean transformation and evaluation methods for stress tolerant soybean under field condition, and the current status of our project on Rd29A:AtDREB 1A transformed soybean lines.
