Effect of Injector Geometry on Penetration,Spread and Structure of a Liquid Jet Injected Normal to a Supersonic Air Stream.

The effect of injector geometry on the penetration, width and structure of a liquid jet injected normal to a supersonic air stream was experimentally studied. Circular, rectangular and square injectors of four different port areas were tested over a wide range of jet/free stream dynamic pressure ratio. For the rectangular injectors, both aligned and transverse configurations with respect to the cross flow were studied. The penetration and width data were obtained from streak photographs and the jet structure was examined using spark photomicrographs. Correlations for jet penetration and width were developed by analyzing the jet as a blunt body in supersonic flow. The effect of injector geometry was taken into account by an experimentally obtained factor. (Modified author abstract)
