The intense discussions that are currently taking place among leaders of the profession and educators suggest that innovation will be a central theme. The premise is that skill is a commodity and that routine engineering services will be available from low cost providers that can and will be located anywhere in the world. The engineering education therefore has to add value beyond just teaching skills. That skill is or will become a commodity does, of course, not mean that future engineers do not have to possess skills. Quite the contrary' they will have to be even more technically proficient than those making a living today practicing narrowly defined tasks.

Each weighing around 27kg, the panels were cast in aluminium to remarkable geometric tolerances to ensure a perfect aesthetic finish to the very striking building. "Casting these panels, each only 10mm thick, was made possible by the unique tooling methodology we created to enable the fine changes in geometry and to ensure no finishing was required on the front or sides of the panel," said James Grainger, director of Bridgnorth, UK-based Grainger & Worrall, a company with an excellent reputation for the production of cast components for the automotive and Motorsport industries. "This project has opened the eyes of architects as to the possibility of using castings for their aesthetic qualities on the face of buildings and to the potential the process can offer them for new and exciting building finishes."

Regardless of how a component is cast, tasks such as de-sanding, de-burring and surface cleaning are often carried out manually. Not only are they extremely time consuming and highly labour-intensive, the quality of manual blasting depends largely on the skills of the person who is blasting, resulting in a process that may not be consistent or documentable. High quality shot blast results are, however, a crucial quality aspect for any foundry product and an important competitive factor.

Correspondingly, the primary goal of 'real time' is that data for making decisions becomes available in a timely manner, meaning immediately after it becomes known. Also, most companies have recognised that strategies oriented towards conditions are an important lever for adjusting to increasing productivity and accessibility.
