Our cover story this month (page 24) reflects the recent reality experienced by metals producers, which is that end users want everything they're making.

We are the first distributor in North America purpose built to combine physical distribution and forward market hedging [price risk management] into one business model. Early in our development as a company, we staked out that niche. Twelve years later, we are a company in thirds: one-third domestic distributor, one-third international merchant trader and one-third asset manager/financial services firm (Flack Metal Bank). The combination of these three activities provides certainty for our company and our customers.

One key customer base, the construction industry, is adjusting. Based in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Steel Dynamics Inc. reports that demand for its long products is strong, supporting increased average realized pricing and expected record shipments for Engineered Bar Products, Roanoke Bar, and the Structural and Rail steel divisions. "Despite softening hot-roll coil steel pricing, broad steel demand remained solid during the second quarter, led by the automotive, construction, and industrial sectors, with energy continuing to improve."

A host of aluminum and steel producers report that their order books are full, and that demand is expected to continue rising as supply chain obstacles clear up and U.S. infrastructure improvement projects begin launching during the second half.

"With respect to the OEM segment, we are doing very well in all of the related industries. Oil and gas is doing well, having picked up significantly," says Martin Little, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Concast Metal Products Co. That initial meeting-now referred to as the "hot tub meeting"-set the Azusa, California-based business on a steep growth trajectory. What started in a Los Angeles warehouse in 1955 by founder Marvin Totten has grown into a five-location, 125+ employee operation. Sales in 2021 topped out over $100 million.

Industry leaders are tapping into their historic metal fabrication expertise and weaving in the latest available processing methods to help meet customer demand. One of the most popular methods is coil processing, which delivers benefits to fabricators and their customers alike. First-time users might ask how it works, why it's important to manufacturers and how it stacks up against other forms of metal processing in terms of consistency, aesthetics and performance.

With facilities in Tucker and Gainesville, Georgia, the company processes about 78 million pounds of steel annually, or 18,000 pounds per hour, and sawing is required for 30 to 35 percent of that total, estimates Paul Carling, president of SteelMart. He's based in Tucker.

    GAME PLAN

In 2021, distributor Intsel Steel West, which has locations throughout the western United States, was moving into a new facility in Fontana, California. As part of its preparation, the company reached out to Commerce City, Colorado-based Steel Storage Systems for assistance with the layout of its sawing systems in the new building. This included producing a new structural saw system and transplanting and expanding an existing saw handling system that Steel Storage had previously installed at Intsel's Commerce City facility.
