    Immunohistochemical Characteristics of Spindle Cell Ameloblastic Carcinoma in a Horse

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 The Author(s)A 2-year-old male Thoroughbred horse presented with a mass in the maxilla. The focally ulcerated mass, approximately 8 cm in diameter, covered the upper left intermediate and corner incisor teeth (nos. 602 and 603 according to the modified Triadan system) and radiographic examination revealed displacement and lysis of the incisors. Histologically, the tumour was composed of a dense proliferation of spindle-shaped cells and neoplastic odontogenic epithelial cells arranged in island, follicular, plexiform or sheetlike patterns. The spindle-shaped cells were immunopositive for cytokeratins AE1/AE3, 5/6, 14 and 19. The Ki-67 index was 32.6% in the spindle cell component. Based on the histological and immunohistochemical findings, the tumour was diagnosed as spindle cell ameloblastic carcinoma.

    Vasculitis Associated with Parrot Bornavirus 4 Infection in a Rose-Crowned Parakeet (Pyrrhura rhodocephala)

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdA 3-month-old, female rose-crowned parakeet (Pyrrhura rhodocephala) was found dead after a 24-h course of lethargy and passing blood-tinged faeces. Fine white streaks were seen in the pectoral muscles on necropsy. Microscopic examination revealed typical lesions of avian ganglioneuritis and vascular necrosis in the pectoral muscles, myocardium, kidneys, air sacs, adrenal glands, pancreas and thyroid gland. These lesions were characterized by mural fibrinoid necrosis of small and medium-calibre arteries and arterioles, associated with lymphoplasmacytic inflammation, necrosis, atrophy and fibrosis of the surrounding tissues. Parrot bornavirus (PaBV) nucleoprotein was demonstrated by immunohistochemistry in smooth muscle and endothelial cells of many vessels. An avian bornavirus was isolated from kidney tissue and its identity confirmed as PaBV-4 by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. We postulate that the vascular lesions could have been immune-mediated and that PaBV-4 may have played a role in its pathogenesis.

    Invasive Fatal Scopulariopsis brevicaulis Infection in Canaries

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdScopulariopsis brevicaulis, a soil saprophyte, is the most common dermatomycotic mould and causes deep fungal infection. Ten canaries died in a flock of 200 and, at necropsy, S. brevicaulis was isolated from lung and beak samples. Macroscopically, the colonies were flat, velvety or powdery, white, tan, dark brown, grey or black. Microscopically, the isolated fungus had hyaline and septate hyphae, finger-like conidiophores on which annelids produced chains of conidia. On histopathological examination, multiple irregular thin red hyphae were seen in lung tissue of the canaries. Although S. brevicaulis may be involved in onychomycosis, pulmonary mycosis or invasive infection in humans, this infection has not been reported in canaries. This study shows that S. brevicaulis can cause invasive and fatal infection in canaries.

    Oral Calcinosis Circumscripta Associated with Wasp (Hymenoptera vespidae) Sting in a Cat

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdIn veterinary medicine, calcinosis circumscripta is a morphological diagnosis for which the cause may be known or idiopathic. The aetiology of the lesion must be investigated because the nature of the underlying disease process will dictate appropriate treatment. We present a case of oral calcinosis circumscripta in a cat caused by a wasp sting and associated with moderate unilateral facial oedema. Following corticosteroid therapy and oedema resolution, hyperaemic, circular, firm, elevated lesions were observed on the buccal mucosa and evolved into whitish, slightly elevated multifocal plaques with an irregular surface. As antibiotic and corticosteroid therapy was ineffective, an excisional biopsy was performed after 6 months of lesion development and a diagnosis of calcinosis circumscripta of dystrophic aetiology was made. To our knowledge, this is the first report of calcinosis circumscripta in association with an insect sting in an animal. Insect stings should be included in the differential diagnosis of calcinosis circumscripta in cats.

    Eosinophilic Granulomatous Myocarditis in Two Pigs

We now report two unrelated porcine cases of idiopathic eosinophilic granulomatous myocarditis that resembled the human disease and which were associated with sudden death. The most relevant gross finding in both cases was marked cardiomegaly, accompanied by raised, multifocal to coalescent small white nodules (1–2 mm) and poorly demarcated multifocal pale areas in the epicardium. Histologically, there were multifocal to coalescent areas of cardiomyocyte loss with replacement by an intense inflammatory infiltrate of eosinophils and epithelioid macrophages, and proliferation of fibrous connective tissue. Immunohistochemistry for porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and Toxoplasma gondii, in-situ hybridization and quantitative polymerase chain reaction tests for PCV2 and porcine circovirus type 3 and aerobic bacterial culture on myocardium samples were negative.

Despite growing popularity and increasing numbers of reptile breeds of atypical colour and pattern variants, only a few studies have investigated the appearance and causes of diseases associated with colour morphs. Ball pythons (Python regius) are among the most frequently bred reptiles and breeders have selected for a multitude of different colour and pattern morphs. Among those colour variants, the spider morph of the ball python is frequently associated with wobble syndrome. The aim of this study was to determine whether a morphological variant can be found and associated with the clinical occurrence of wobble syndrome in spider ball pythons, using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging as in-vivo diagnostic methods. Data from five spider and three wild type ball pythons was assessed and evaluated comparatively. We were able to identify distinctive structural differences in inner ear morphology in spider ball pythons, which were highly likely related to wobble syndrome. To our knowledge, this is the first report of these anomalies and provides a basis for further anatomical and genetic studies and discussion of the implications for animal welfare in reptile breeding.

    Effects of Raising or Lowering Molybdenum Status on Outcome of Acute Infection with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis in Mature Rats

    查看更多>>摘要:? 2022 Elsevier LtdMolybdate (MoO4) supplements can suppress or enhance nematode infections in ruminants, depending on exposure level, but there have been no investigations in non-ruminants. Three groups of 16 mature rats were each fed a commercial diet and given MoO4 (10 mg Mo/l), tungstate (a molybdenum [Mo] antagonist) (MoO4, 350 mg W/l) or no supplement (C) via drinking water for 40 days before acute infection with 3,600 Nippostrongylus brasiliensis larvae. Group MoO4, also received allopurinol (1 g/l), a molybdenoenzyme inhibitor, from 4 days post infection (dpi). Subgroups of four rats from each group were killed at 7–14 dpi. A group of six rats was left untreated and uninfected and subgroups killed 10 or 12 dpi. Infection reduced intakes of food and water but impacts were greatest in group MoO4,. Median worm counts in groups C, MoO4, and Mo+ were 900, 941 and 510, respectively, at 7 dpi and 9,40 and 0 (P = 0.05) at 10 dpi. Median faecal egg counts were consistently lowest in group Mo+. Worm weight was reduced (P <0.05), worm tissue protease increased and superoxide dismutase activities increased in worm (P < 0.01) and host duodenal homogenates (P < 0.01) from group Mo+. In group MoO4, liver Mo concentration decreased, duodenal xanthine oxidoreductase activity (DXOR) became totally inhibited and plasma uric acid was barely detectable at 10 dpi. Plasma mast cell protease activity and duodenal malonyldialdehyde concentrations, markers of inflammation, were increased by nematode infection (P <0.001) but unaffected by water treatments. Liver Mo, liver copper (Cu) and plasma Cu concentrations were increased in group Mo+ and plasma Cu concentration was increased in group MoO4, suggesting systemic exposure to partially thiolated MoO4 and WO4. Supplementary MoO4 impaired larval establishment and changed parasite biochemistry without affecting the inflammatory response to infection but may have required partial thiolation to do so. Rats did not rely on DXOR activity to expel N. brasiliensis.
