What's more, the company has also decided to implement a two-pronged plan to sustain its latest profitability. The company has posted a profit after tax of Rs 10.2 million for the year ended March 31, 2002, as against the net loss of Rs 183.2 million recorded in the previous year. The loss in 1999-2000 stood at Rs 145 million. Tinplate saw a reversal of fortune in 2001-02 because of an all-round improvement in performance, according to Mr Shashi S. Prasad, Chairman. Both production and sales went up, while the net realisation did not drop any further. The performance, it was felt, should be seen against the backdrop of a sluggish demand situation. Mr Prasad was addressing shareholders at the company's 83rd AGM recently in Kolkatta. The company, which had losses of Rs 620 million in 1997-98, is now coming up with an elaborate programme to improve its performance. This included a debt restructuring exercise and a quality improvement package. Debt recast, incidentally, had been on the company's agenda for some time, and considerable progress had already been made on this front.

Production of nickel in matte in the first half of 2002 was 31,400 tons (69.3 million pounds), compared with 30,900 tons (68.1 million pounds) in the prior-year period. "Second-quarter production was effectively flat year-over-year and slightly less than plan due primarily to lower nickel ore grades. Consequently, we expect to produce 130 million pounds of nickel in matte in 2002, below our original objective," said Edward W. Hodkin, president and chief executive, in a press release. The company's realized price for nickel in matte averaged 5,244 dollars per ton (2.38 dollars per pound) in the second quarter of 2002, compared with 5,139 dollars per ton (2.33 dollars per pound) in the second quarter of 2001.

It is also looking at the possibility of expanding its production base. The French outfit, which has a capacity of two million tonnes, is expected to help Tinplate in terms of product development. Presentations have already been made and a strategic partnership seems to be in the offing. "We are trying to work out a technical collaboration, which will enable us to add value to our existing production profile," Raina said.

In Japan, weak demand and ample inventories at endusers' warehouses prevented domestic zinc prices from edging higher, while imports remained low with no spot transactions done, traders said. Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., the country's biggest zinc producer, actually lowered its selling price by Y4,000 to Y132,000 a metric ton. Japan's domestic zinc prices are tied to LME zinc prices and the exchange rate of the dollar against the yen. "Supplies at trading companies and producers are very low and it would be difficult if customers want to buy (zinc metal) on a spot basis. But there has been no spot queries," a Tokyo-based trader said. Supply tightness in Japan resulted from producers cutting output in July and August by a combined 10,000 tons.
