Altered states of consciousness: Chess in the zone

    Leskowitz, Eric
    4页
查看更多>>摘要:The Zone is a state of mind/body coordination that is much sought after by athletes because it is so conducive to achieving peak performance. The experience of this state can be so transcendent that some have come to view sport as a spiritual practice. An immensely popular recent movie about competitive chess, The Queen's Gambit, is not overtly about the Zone, addressing such popular themes as female empowerment and chess as a replacement competitive sport in the socially disconnected time of Covid. But its popularity may also stem from its evocation of the peak performance Zone in chess matches. The film's young female protagonist is able to play inspired chess by using a range of approaches to accessing this altered state of consciousness (ASC). This essay will discuss several aspects of the Zone, including psycho-spiritual tools to elicit it, pathol-ogy-based medical explanations for its occurrence, paranormal aspects of this ASC, and its possible role in helping humanity cope with the Covid crisis. (Spoiler alert: Important plot points from the Netflix movie The Queen's Gambit will be discussed in this essay.) (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

In this protocol, the medium was provided with only the deceased's name by the interviewer, the latter having no further knowledge about the deceased. In every session, the medium was asked to provide information about two deceased persons of the same gender. This information, excluding generic details, was entered into two anonymous lists. The information of these two readings was sent to the research assistant charged with maintaining contact with the sitters. Each sitter was asked to assign a value to every piece of information listed using a four-point Likert scale from 'totally wrong' to 'totally correct', and to provide a global score for each reading. Results: 65.8% of the intended readings were correctly identified with respect to the chance of 50%. Further-more, intended readings had on average 29.5% more correct information than the control ones. Qualitative data indicate that mediums attain information both passively and actively, that is as if they retrieved infor-mation without or directly interacting with the deceased. Conclusions: this study provides further evidence that some mediums are able to obtain accurate information about deceased people knowing only the deceased's name and with no interaction with sitters; it also sup-ports the hypothesis that, in some cases, the sources of the information are the deceased themselves.(c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. Tra-ditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is widely used in China and is reported to improve patient symptoms. This study compare the clinical efficacy and safety of herbal decoction CheReCunJin alone and combined with hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of pSS.Methods: Seventy pSS patients without visceral involvement were randomly assigned in equal numbers to oral administration of CheReCunJin decoction only (group 1) or CheReCunJin decoction combined with hydroxychloroquine (group 2), Efficacy was evaluated after 3 months of treatment by the TCM syndrome and total effectiveness scores, European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Sjo euro gren's Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI), and Sjo euro gren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index (ESSDAI), Schirmer's test, erythro-cyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels. Safety was assessed. Results: There were no differences in the baseline characteristics of the two groups. Compared with baseline values, the TCM syndrome, ESSPRI and ESSDAI scores, ESR, CRP, and Schirmer's test results improved signifi-cantly in both groups after treatment (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in the TCM syndrome total effectiveness rate between the two groups (p = 0.31). Between-group differences in the changes in ESSPRI, ESSDAI, ESR, CRP, Schirmer's test, and IgG after treatment were not significant (all p> 0.05). Adverse reactions were reported in 5.88% of group 1 and 3.33% of group 2 participants (p = 0.83).Conclusion: CheReCunJin decoction alone was effective and safe for the treatment of pSS. 查看更多>>摘要:The purpose of this study was to create a detailed characterization of the nature of the sensory perceptions associated with after-death communication. A primary aim was to determine if perceptions of after-death communication (ADC) support one or more of three hypotheses: (1) they are the result of hallucinations or day-to-day thoughts about the deceased; (2) they are subjective phenomena reflecting the extrasensory per-ception of remote events; or (3) they constitute objective phenomena, perceived more solidly, as if within the physical world. Methods: The study included a quantitative analysis and qualitative first-person narrative description of part of the data set from a detailed questionnaire study (991 viable cases) investigating the phenomenology of spontaneous ADCs. Results and Conclusions: A majority of respondents reported that ADCs were distinctly different from simple thoughts about the deceased. Specifically, relative distribution of ADCs across the senses was 46% visual, 44% auditory, 48% touch, and 28% olfactory, with 34% sensing the presence of the deceased without input from the five senses. ADCs often were perceived as external and hav-ing properties of the material world (e.g., solidity, tactile qualities). Even the more nebulous 'sense of pres-ence' cases were perceived as having a distinct location in space and as being identifiable as a specific deceased presence despite the lack of sensory cues. These elements are more compatible with hypotheses 2 and 3 than hypothesis 1. (c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using semi-structured one-on-one telephone and in-person interviews with a sample of parents of children, as well as healthcare providers and complementary therapy providers. Results: A total of 50 individuals, from key-stakeholder groups, were interviewed between May 2014 and Jan-uary 2016. This study identified the following facilitators for the integration of complementary therapies within conventional care: 1) stakeholders' open-mindedness and familiarity with care practices outside of their experiences; 2) stakeholders' open communication, respect for eachothers' roles in the process of care, and appreciation for the role of complementary therapies within conventional medicine; and 3) stakehold-ers' receptiveness to redefining the meaning of a 'positive outcome' in the context of hospital care. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate that some of the existing barriers to the integration of complementary therapies in conventional hospital care could be mediated by creating an environment where the fundamental value of commitment to patient wellbeing is equally shared by all stakeholders.(c) 2021 Elsevier Inc.
