She was 17 and I had just turned 18. Our wedding photographer's camera of choice was a Polaroid-you know, the ones with self-developing pictures? About an hour after our wedding, we pulled our 1965 Plymouth Sport Fury into a drive-through restaurant to grab two hot dogs for our honeymoon meal. Then, we were off to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a two-night honeymoon getaway.

We accept challenges and we solve problems!" This is a direct quote taken from my inaugural presidential address seven months ago. We built on that declaration, to be a collective body of problem solvers in tackling the global climate crisis. As you just saw in the opening video, ASHRAE Regions and Chapters showed an exemplary commitment not only to understanding how climate change affects building planning, design, construction, and operation, but they volunteered immense time and expertise to develop resources to support actionable, wide-scale building decarbonization practices. Our pursuit to action in tackling this challenge remains steadfast. If you recall from my last address, ASHRAE is committed to the following efforts:

The 2018 CBECS data shows that 12% of the US commercial floor space is educational buildings (EIA-CBECS Data," n.d.). Educational buildings include school and college buildings, however college buildings consume more fuel per unit area (Bae et al. 2022). College and university buildings include classrooms, laboratories, administration buildings, dormitory, and libraries. These buildings behave differendy than offices and other building types. Firstly, these spaces are occupied during the academic session (generally 9 months out of 12) and are at low capacity during the hottest and coldest periods of the year (summer and winter break). Secondly, the occupancy reduces from 5pm (Bae et al. 2022) which is the same time for peak demand in summers.

One state model does not capture the thermal dynamics well enough, and the three-state model is overparameterized. The future directives are to fine tune the models by introducing process noise and white noise models with CTSM in R and use the optimize models to develop control strategies for fans to reduce the energy usage.

Occupant Response to Changes to Ventilation Rate in a Controlled Environment

Future work will include treatment 3, response to increasing temperature and constant ventilation, more participants across all treatments, and a set of two-hour trials to assess comfort over a more typical demand response period.

    ASHRAE Standard 241 and Graphene Silver-Coated MERV-A 9-A Filters: A Case Study

This study compares the efficacy of a novel silver-graphene oxide (AgGO) coated MERV-A 9-A (M9AZG) filter to commonly used filters through Std. 241 's approach. Theoretical analyses across the office, gym, classroom, and supermarket scenarios reveal M9AZG's comparable performance to MER V-A 13-A, especially in high occupancy density settings. Furthermore, reducing occupancy alongside M9AZG adoption emerges as a useful strategy for improving indoor air quality and avoiding HVAC modifications. Using lower MER V-rated filters with an enhanced viral filtration efficiency (VFE) technology could remove concerns associated with higher resistance to airflow, energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Assessing Awareness and Willingness of College Students to Participate in Demand-Side Management Strategies: A Survey-Based Approach

The broad participation of residential buildings in demand side management (DSM) can support decarbonization goals and the use of power generated by clean energy sources. The purpose of this study is to assess awareness and potential factors that may influence college students' willingness for load flexibility to support DSM participation. An online survey was conducted among students majoring in civil, environmental, and applied engineering in two distinct classes. Preliminary findings suggest that enhanced awareness of the DSM strategies reduce levels of concern with participation in demand side management programs. The factors that appear to drive willingness to participate in DSM for this specific population are related to the potential reduction of electricity costs, helping the environment, and overall energy savings.

Drone-Mounted Photoionization Detector Protocol for Improved Outdoor Dispersion Measurements

Many methods have been put forward for estimating the dynamics of plumes issuing from building exhausts and other sources, including visual inspection, first principles arguments and derivations, scale model measurements using techniques such as flame ionization detectors, and others. In outdoor environments, measuring dispersion in real environments is often challenging because of several factors, including cross-contamination from many constituents that already exist in outdoor air, the need to measure very low concentrations, and the expense of any tracer gas that is used for these purposes.

Retrofitting Application of EC Motor Plug Fans in HVAC systems

查看更多>>摘要:This study focuses on an electrically commutated (EC) motor with a direct-driven plug fan in the application of HVAC systems. In recent years, the improvement of permanent magnet motors in efficiency and reliability has urged to replace the traditional AC motor with an EC fan. Many HVAC projects have started to retrofit the AC motor belt-driven centrifugal fan with housing into the EC fan. To compare EC fans' performance and benefits to AC fans, this study experiments and field measurement on two retrofit projects. The performance rating is based on AMCA 207 standards, including transmission loss, motor efficiency, driver efficiency, and fan efficiency based on the AMCA certification. In the retrofitting project, the error for the efficiency evaluation method and field measurement is within 5%, which proves that the evaluation could be applied. Case 1 is a fan retrofit project of AHU in the airport waiting room. The overall efficiency of the original AC fan is 51%, and the EC fan is 66%, which results in 23% full load energy saving. In Case 2, a primary AHU retrofit project in a hospital, the overall efficiency of a 10% AC fan was replaced with a 42% EC fan. Both cases show significant potential for energy saving.
