Ever-increasing population, rapidurbanization, and industrialization have resulted in improper discharge of wastewater leading tohazardous impacts on human health and the environment. As a result, globally nations are adoptingmeasures to retain water and improve the qualitative parameters of wastewater to make it harmlessand reusable. These technologies are a fruitful approach for solving water shortages, removingcontaminants, and recycling them back to the environment for various uses, for example, drinking, washing, etc.

This exponentialgrowth has come at a cost: a staggering increase in waste and wastewater, presenting formidablechallenges to our environment and sustainability. Faced with this urgent dilemma, the imperativeto develop innovative technologies for resource recovery has never been more critical. Amidst thischallenge, algae, tiny yet extraordinary photosynthetic organisms, have emerged as potent microbiotain the quest for environmental solutions. In this context, this book Algal Systems for ResourceRecovery from Waste and Wastewater testifies to the pivotal role algae can play in addressing someof the world’s most pressing issues.

As the resources are limited, expanding citieshave been facing severe crises concerning the pollution of water bodies, the increasing gap betweenthe demand and supply of domestic water, and the widening chasm between the amount of wastewatergenerated and the installed capacity of wastewater treatment plants. Challenges are also posed by lackof space, monitoring and data acquisition on water quality and quantity, appropriate and sustainabletechnologies, and vulnerability to climate change. Moreover, the existing infrastructure is aged anddilapidated, urging immediate attention.

Marine plastic litter has become a seriousglobal issue due to the fact that about 10 million metric tons of plastic wastegenerated on land enters the marine environment annually, contaminatingmajor river basins and oceans. Plastics are also difficult to biodegrade and sometypes are non-degradable, resulting in accumulation rather than decompositionof plastics in the environment. One estimate predicts that by 2050, the weightof plastic waste in the ocean will be greater than the weight of fish. For thisreason, in March 2022, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted aresolution entitled, ‘End Plastic Pollution’ related to the marine environment, and negotiations for an internationally legally binding instrument will beginfrom the second half of 2022 onward.

The convergenceof nanotechnology and biotechnology has opened up remarkable possibilities in addressing thesecomplex issues. This book Nanobiohybrids for Advanced Wastewater Treatment and Energy Recoverydelves into the fascinating realm where nanoscience and bioprocess engineering intersect to offernovel approaches for tackling two pressing concerns simultaneously: wastewater treatment andenergy recovery.
