India is soon to become the most populous nation in the world. Also, it is projected that by 2050, morethan 800 million people will live in urban areas in India. As the resources are limited, expanding citieshave been facing severe crises concerning the pollution of water bodies, the increasing gap betweenthe demand and supply of domestic water, and the widening chasm between the amount of wastewatergenerated and the installed capacity of wastewater treatment plants. Challenges are also posed by lackof space, monitoring and data acquisition on water quality and quantity, appropriate and sustainabletechnologies, and vulnerability to climate change. Moreover, the existing infrastructure is aged anddilapidated, urging immediate attention.
