Beloved overturns traditional attitudes towards motherhood as desperate or destructive. Sethe exchanges her child's death for eternal freedom. This thesis attempts to analyze the deep maternal love behind the infanticide from Sethe's experience, the slavery's influence, and her spoiling Beloved.
