Market Economy and Community Cooperation:A Case Study of Organic Agriculture in Lamphun,Thailand
This paper describes the production practices of smallholders engaged in organic agriculture in Lamphun in recent years, indicating that the social structure and traditional morality in this region still have strong resilience and stability under market conditions, which is the main reason for the tenacious existence of small-scale peasant economy in Thailand. In the context of marketization, small farmers face risks such as unstable sales and shortage of agricultural labor, but organic farmers mitigate these risks and maintain the value of organic agriculture by effectively using organic farming techniques and community cooperation networks.Under the influence of government policies, market forces and the moral code of"mutual help"and"solidarity and cooperation", smallholders actively establish agricultural cooperative organizations such as community enterprises and learning centers, which not only helps them maintain livelihood security in the process of participating in the market, but also makes this moral code begin to take on the characteristics of the market economy and glow with new vitality. The production practices of small farmers also help maintain social order in the countryside and pass on the traditional moral norms.
