Aphanizomenon is a filamentous and nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, which is invasive and prone to harmful algal blooms. In recent years, the expansion of Aphanizomenon has become a worldwide phenome-non driven by global climate change. Aphanizomenon is widely distributed in temperate zone and tropical water bodies, and its ability to synthesize algal toxins and odors seriously affects the functioning of aquatic escosys-tems,posing a threat to drinking water safety and human health. Aphanizomenon is low temperature resistant, preferring low light, proliferating rapidly in alkaline, low nitrogen and high phosphorus water bodies. With its unique ecological strategies of Aphanizomenon such as nitrogen fixation, phosphorus storage, release of algal toxins, and formation of group sheaths makes it gain a greater competitive advantage in interspecific competi-tion and community structure succession, becoming an advantageous population. In view of the harmfulness and expansion of Aphanizomenon, this paper reviewed the research frontiers of Aphanizomenon, including its physiological and ecological characteristics, distribution characteristics, competitive advantages and key driv-ing factors, and also made a prospect for relevant research fields, providing a scientific basis for further re-search on the formation mechanism of competitive advantages of Aphanizomenon, and effective prevention and control of Aphanizomenon bloom.
