Characteristics of Plant Chlorophyll and the Prospects for its Use in Forest Ecological Study
Plant chlorophyll content is an important measurement parameter in physiological, biochemical, biophysical and ecological reseaich. It serves as a key index not only for plant growth and biomass estimation, but also for detecting plant health and its relation to environmental factors. In this article the characteristics and function of plant chlorophyll were described and the advances in the determination and analytic techniques, spatiotemporal heterogeneity, and inter-specific variability of chlorophyll and its relation to environmental factors were reviewed. In view of these chlorophyll characteristics, it can be a good indicator to diagnose plant nutrition level and inspect environmental effects on plant growth. It was suggested that it is time-consuming and high-cost determination in traditional methods, but SPAD-502 Chlorophyll Meter will be a good surrogate to determine chlorophyll content at forest ecosystem level to provide good reference data for ecological research. The general perspective on the future application of chlorophyll index in forest ecosystem and urban forest study was put forward.
