A Comparative Study on the Effects of Tai Chi and Square Dancing on Negative Emotions,Cancer-Related Fatigue, and Quality of Life of Breast Cancer Survivors
This study aimed to investigate the effects of square dancing and Tai Chi exercise on negative emo-tions,cancer-related fatigue, and quality of life in breast cancer survivors.A total of 143 breast cancer patients treated at the First Affiliated Hospital and Second Affiliated Hospital of a medical university from January 2021 to January 2022 who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into a control group(n=48),a square danc-ing intervention group(n=50),and a Tai Chi intervention group(n=45).The Self-Rating Anxiety Scale(SAS)and Self-Rating Depression Scale(SDS),Cancer Fatigue Scale(CFS),and Quality of Life Scale(WHOQOL-BREF)were used to measure and analyse the patients in the three groups. The results showed that:1)All three groups exhibited negative emotions such as anxiety and depression after surgery. The Tai Chi group and the square dancing group performed significantly better than the control group(p<0.05).However,there was no significant difference between the Tai Chi group and the square dancing group(p>0.05).2)Regarding cancer-related fa-tigue,the Tai Chi and square dancing intervention groups performed significantly better than the traditional reha-bilitation exercise group in various dimensions(p<0.05).However,in the emotional fatigue dimension, there was no significant difference between the square dancing intervention group and the control group(p>0.05).No significant differences were observed between the Tai Chi exercise group and the square dancing exercise group.3)At the 3-month assessment, except for the social and environmental domains where no significant differences were observed among the three groups, all other data indicators showed significant differences. After 6 months, both the square dancing and Tai Chi exercise groups outperformed the control group(p<0.05).The Tai Chi group scored higher than the square dancing group, but the difference was not statistically significant. In conclusion, this study found that:1)Both Tai Chi and square dancing interventions can improve post-operative anxiety and de-pression,reduce fatigue levels, and enhance the quality of life of breast cancer survivors, with superior recovery outcomes compared to traditional post-operative rehabilitation exercises.Tai Chi and square dancing exercises did not show significant differences in improving negative emotions and cancer-related fatigue in breast cancer survi-vors.However,the Tai Chi group exhibited slightly better improvements in quality of life compared to the square dancing group.2)Both Tai Chi and square dancing exercises are suitable in intensity and have demonstrated good rehabilitation outcomes for breast cancer survivors. Moreover, these two exercises have a broad social foundation and provide a good platform for breast cancer survivors to exercise, socialize, and reintegrate into the community and society. These findings suggest that Tai Chi and square dancing are worthwhile interventions that merit further promotion and implementation.
