Han Yu's Postscript to Zhang Zhongcheng's Biography,a classical prose work celebrated through the ages,has had a significant impact on the widely circulated"Dual Loyalty"stories of later generations.Following the defense of Suiyang,the complex personnel conflicts at court hindered the dissemination of Nan Jiyun's heroic deeds.In his Postscript,Han Yu was the first to commend Nan Jiyun's tragic act of"cutting off his finger to request reinforcements,"which vividly reflected the agony of loyal officials oppressed in the struggles of bureaucracy.This act resonated deeply with later audiences.Han Yu,adhering to moral principles,defended Zhang Xun and Xu Yuan against accusa-tions,emphasizing the helplessness and inevitability faced by loyal officials in moral dilemmas.His work significantly influenced the depiction of the"Killing the Concubine and Cooking the Servant"plot,the central theme of"Dual Loyalty"narratives in Ming and Qing dynasty operas and novels.This reflects the unique process of how ancient Chi-nese classics become folk story,demonstrating the complex trajectory of the interaction between the refined and the popular.
