Xu Xusheng's Academic Path and the"Practical"Characteristics of Academic Research
Xu Xusheng was influenced by the academic thoughts of Wang Chuanshan and others in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties in his early years. He witnessed the national crisis caused by Western aggression and the plundering of Chinese cultural relics by Western scholars during their investigations in China, which led to a strong belief that academic research should have been pragmatically applicable for the nation and state. The scientific expedition to the northwest of China and Switzerland he participated in,not only broadening his archaeological knowledge, but also strengthening his in-depth under-standing of Western scholars'plundering of Chinese cultural relics resources. He presided over archaeological excavations in Shaanxi at the Beiping Research Institute with the aim of searching for archaeological materials to compile national history to stimulate the national confidence needed by the people during the Sino-Japanese War.He studied the history of the legendary era and cultures of both Chinese and Western during the wartime, which was closely related to his desire to save the nation from crisis.Compared to the research atmosphere dominated by the pursuit of truth in historiography during the Republic of China period,Xu Xusheng's academic research has always been characterized by practicality.
