Abstract
There are 29 descriptions of Sun Wukong shedding tears in Journey to the West, mainly including two categories:one is fake crying, which is a means to achieve a certain goal;the other is real crying, which is a natural expression of sincere feelings.Sun Wukong sheds tears when he thinks about life and death, when he leaves his master, when he encounters setbacks in defeating demons, when his master gets in trouble, when he feels wronged or when he complains to Guanyin Bodhisattva and Tathagata Buddha.Sun Wukong cries mainly for the following three reasons:his true love for his master, his faithfulness being misunderstood, and his confusion and apprehen-sion about the fate and future.Sun Wukong's tears embody the author's resentment over his unrecognized talents as well as his help-lessness when facing the conflict between seeking personal independence and realizing social values. The author expresses his depres-sion and grievances through Sun Wukong's experiences, reflecting his thoughts and lamentation over the fate of scholars.
