"Internal and External Divisions":The Management Concept and Practice of the Southwest Border Chieftains in the Ming Dynasty——Exploration into the Establishment and Influence of Meng Mi's Chieftain
During the TianShun and ChengHua periods, the Yunnan Mubang chieftain and MengMi chieftain engaged in years of land disputes and enmity. After sending officials for investigation and debate, the Ming Dynasty ultimately established the Mengmi chieftain and placed it directly under the Yunnan Provincial Administration. This disposal result not only caused discontent from the surrounding chieftains, but also intensified the disputes among the chieftains in the southwest region, greatly impacting the rule of the Ming Dynasty in the southwestern. This is closely related to the governance concept of the Ming rulers, which aimed to divide the internal and external chieftains. The main manifestation was that the Ming Dynasty mainly adopted the strategy of sending officials to appease and Conquer chieftain with chieftain in the southwestern border, and only sent troops to suppress them when the disputes invaded the border.During the Wanli period, the establishment of the Eight Passes actually established this governance concept of"Internal and External Divi-sions".
