"The country cannot stand without defense,the people are uneasy without soldiers,and only when the country is safe can the people be safe".Although peace and development have now become a global theme,the instability,hegemonism and power politics still exist in this world.The Chinese nation is still facing unprecedented challenges,and national defense education still needs to focus on cultivating the national spirit in order to cope with all kinds of obstacles on the way forward.National defense education at universi-ties in the new era is an important way for college students to cultivate morality and comprehensive national defense quality,through which university students can have an in-depth understanding of the national security situation and enhance their sense of national identity and responsibility.The national spirit with patriotism as the core is not only the core goal of national defense education at uni-versities,but also the fundamental driving force and important guarantee for the realization of the implementation of national defense ed-ucation at universities.Therefore,strengthening national defense education at universities is of great significance for cultivating the na-tional spirit of university students.This paper discusses the relationship between national defense education at universities and the culti-vation of national spirit among university students.Also,this study reveals the methodology of national defense education to cultivate the national spirit of university students so that fully implement the joint force for both national defense education and the cultivation of the national spirit.
