Disease and Medicine:Lu Xun's and Chen Yingning's Divergent Views of Taoism and the Construction of National Spirituality
Lu Xun,through the lens of cultural introspection,identifies Taoism as the root of China's societal lag.Meanwhile,Chen Yingn-ing takes a stance of cultural resistance,viewing Taoism as a powerful remedy against external cultural aggression.In the political,cultural,and ideological contexts of late Qing and Republic of China,intellectuals'individual consciousness intertwined with the discourse of the nation-state.Their varying perceptions of Taoism formed a crucial basis for constructing the national discourse in the May Fourth New Culture Movement and the anti-Japanese resistance wave.Lu Xun criticized the Taoism-rooted traditional culture and wanted to rebuild the modem,sound and inde-pendent national character.After Songhu Anti-Japanese War,Chen Yingning made it clear that Taoism was used as a tool to unite the spirit of the nation.
