A Discourse on the Relationship between the Early Central Committee Organ Newspaper Front Guard and Chen Duxiu
The monthly publication Front Guard, which was published after the Third National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP),served as the central theoretical organ newspaper. In various writings about this publication, there has been a tendency to focus on its rela-tionship with the editor-in-chief Qu Qiubai, while the relationship with the then Central Committee leader Chen Duxiu has been somewhat over-looked. In fact,Chen Duxiu was the primary architect of the nature and positioning of this publication. As early as after the Second National Con-gress,he had planned to establish a theoretical publication similar to Front Guard to discuss"domestic and international political and economic issues,"reflecting his vision for the systematic operation of the central party newspaper under the influence of the Comintern. During the publica-tion process of Front Guard,Chen Duxiu was an important contributor and also participated in editing and publishing work. While the publica-tion was committed to elucidating the Nationalist Revolution from political and economic perspectives,Chen Duxiu and others also paid atten-tion to the trends in the realm of thought and culture. He proposed the"united front in the ideological revolution",indicating that in the political revolutionary discourse,he still strived to make achievements in the movement of thought and culture.
