Grammatical Functions and Related Sources of Degree Adverbs in Qiandong Miao Language
This paper discusses degree adverbs in Qiandong Miao Language, and investigates their structural features, grammatical function word order types, grammaticalization path and mechanism. It ar-gues that there are two types of adverbs of degree in Qiandong Miao Language, which are relative adverbs of degree and absolute adverbs of degree. Both of them modify adjectives or restrictive verbs, and are se-mantic representations of degree increments. In terms of grammar,Qiandong Miao adverbs of degree have the function of comparison, prominence and description, which can compare, highlight or describe the state or degree of things or actions. There are two kinds of word order:pre type and post type, that is"S+Adj+Adv"and"S+Adv+Adj".The former is the inherent word order of Miao language, while the lat-ter is borrowed from Chinese, which is the result of grammatical diffusion under language contact.Ad-verbs of degree belong to function word components, which are derived from the grammaticization of con-tent words and embodied by means of semantic diffusion and structural recombination. There are three grammaticalization paths. One is grammaticalization of meaningful verbs, the other is grammaticalization of adjectives, and the third is grammaticalization of quantitative structures. Each path has different charac-teristics.The causes of grammaticalization include language contact and pragmatic change. The mecha-nisms of grammaticalization include analogy, reanalysis, metaphor and metonymy, and grammatical repli-cation.
