Digital Inclusive Finance,Urbanization and Urban—Rural Income Gap:Empirical Research Based on Provincial Panel Data
This study measures the urban—rural income gap among provinces and explores the relation-ship between digital inclusive finance, urbanization, and urban—rural income gap with panel data from 31 provinces(based on data availability, excluding Hong Kong,Macao, and Taiwan)in China from 2012 to 2020.The results indicate that:The overall income gap between urban and rural areas in China has been de-creasing year by year, but the imbalance between urban and rural areas in the western region is still promi-nent;Digital inclusive finance can effectively narrow the income gap between urban and rural areas, but its impact gradually decreases in the eastern, central, and western regions, showing significant regional heter-ogeneity;The development of urbanization plays an intermediary role in narrowing the urban—rural income gap through digital inclusive finance, which is an important path for digital inclusive finance to narrow the urban—rural income gap;The impact of digital inclusive finance on urban—rural income gap is also due to the single threshold effect of digital inclusive finance and urbanization level. The higher the level of digital inclusive finance and urbanization, the more significant the alleviating effect of digital inclusive finance on urban—rural income gap.
