Regarding the phrase"mo-ding fang-zhong(摩顶放踵)"in Mencius, traditional explana-tions since the Eastern Han Dynasty often used Zhao Qi's annotations.Somecontemporaryscholars have opened up new ideas and interpreted it from different perspectives.Accurate exegesis of this phrase should be traced back to its origin and verified from the perspectives of Mozi and Mohism. After examining and an-alyzing Mozi's character and Mohist beliefs,it can be concluded that,"mo-ding(摩顶)"should be under-stood as"rub the top of the head bald",which refers to bald or short hair with baldtemples,and"fang-zhong(放踵)"should be understood as"letting go of one's heels",which refers to barefoot or wearing straw shoes."Mo-ding fang-zhong(摩顶放踵)",in other words, describes a simple image of bald and barefoot without embellishment of clothing.
